Wayve Launches Trial of Cutting-Edge Self-Driving Tech in the US

Buzzy, well-funded U.K. startup Wayve is making moves in the U.S., testing its self-learning automated driving software in San Francisco and setting up shop in Sunnyvale, California.

Wayve plans to kick things off by testing a simpler version of its automated driving system, which relies on self-learning rather than rules. This approach is similar to Tesla’s strategy. Test drivers will be cruising around the Bay Area in a small fleet of tricked-out Mustang Mach-E EVs with no hands on the wheel.

This expansion follows a massive $1 billion funding round for Wayve, with SoftBank Group leading the way. Other investors include Nvidia, Microsoft, and more recently, Uber. Wayve aims to eventually offer its “Embodied AI” technology not only to car manufacturers in need of self-driving solutions, but also to companies in the robotics industry.
