Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was tragically shot and killed in Midtown Manhattan early Wednesday morning on his way to the New York Hilton Midtown for the company’s annual investor conference. Reports indicate that a masked gunman fired at Thompson from around 20 feet away, then fled the scene on a bicycle.

Law enforcement officials are actively investigating the incident, offering a $10,000 reward for any information related to the shooting. Thompson, aged 50, took on the role of CEO of UnitedHealthcare, the largest health insurance provider in the United States, in April 2021 after a successful career at the company that began in 2004 as a director of corporate development.
In October, UnitedHealthcare disclosed a massive data breach, revealing that over 100 million individuals had their private health information compromised during a ransomware attack on its subsidiary, Change Healthcare, in February. The cyberattack resulted in widespread disruptions and outages in the U.S. healthcare industry for months.
