Symbiotic Security, announcing a $3 million seed round today, watches over developers as they code and points out potential security issues in real time. While other companies do this, Symbiotic also emphasizes teaching developers to avoid these bugs from the start.
The company, launched earlier this year, released its MVP about a month ago with a focus on infrastructure-as-code languages like Terraform. Eventually, the team plans to expand to the rest of the application stack and support languages like Python and JavaScript.
Robert, Symbiotic’s co-founder, mentioned that even the most developer-friendly security tools are primarily for security teams. This dynamic often leaves developers torn between fixing security issues and developing new features.

Symbiotic aims to guide developers in the right direction, akin to the code completion tools they are familiar with. The goal is to help developers address bugs while coding, before continuous integration and delivery platforms scan for issues, slowing down the process instantly.
Additionally, Symbiotic goes a step further by offering on-the-spot security training to developers. These short, focused sessions are aimed at immediate needs and are not abstract. While the training lessons and videos are currently prerecorded, there are plans to make them more AI-driven for relevance to specific issues developers face.
Symbiotic is backed by Lerer Hippeau, Axeleo Capital, and Factorial Capital. Graham Brown, managing partner at Lerer Hippeau, commended co-founders Jerome and Edouard for their unique approach to address the increasing demand for shift-left security solutions. The potential of Symbiotic to empower developers and security teams is significant.
