Several projects are currently in progress to create a video-first app for the open-source social network Bluesky. One app, in particular, stands out from the rest. Reelo, now renamed Spark, is differentiating itself by building on the AT Protocol that Bluesky uses, rather than directly on the Bluesky social network itself. This approach allows Reelo to offer a wider range of features, including support for longer videos, filters, effects, a music library, and potentially, livestreaming.
Other apps in this space, such as Bluescreen, Videos for Bluesky, and Skylight, are limited by the features available on Bluesky. Since Bluesky was initially designed to rival Twitter, it lacks the extensive feature set found in apps like TikTok.
The limitations present an opportunity for a new video app powered by the AT Protocol. While Reelo can interoperate with Bluesky, it also has the potential to stand on its own. Reelo’s developer, João Davi S. N., based in Brazil, explains that other video apps built on Bluesky lack essential features for direct competition with TikTok, like creator tools and monetization.
To address these issues, João Davi opted to develop a video app based on the AT Protocol. This decision allows Reelo to support videos up to three minutes long and potentially offer livestreaming in the future. In contrast, third-party video apps on Bluesky are currently limited to one-minute video support unless Bluesky changes its policies.
Reelo features a vertical video feed with standard interaction buttons for liking, commenting, sharing, and more. The app will have its own personal data server for user data storage, with the option for technically savvy users to set up their personal data servers similar to Bluesky.
Users can expect the app to integrate with Bluesky for friend discovery, but sharing Reelo videos back to Bluesky will be an optional feature within the app. Reelo may include multiple custom feeds, such as Bluesky videos, Reelo videos, and thematic feeds for Music, Dance, and others. Monetization strategies may involve ads, subscriptions, and revenue sharing with creators.
Beta testing for Reelo, now known as Spark, is expected to begin early this year. Stay tuned for updates as João Davi continues to fine-tune the app for a public release.
