SoftBank to Inject $500M into Robotics Startup Skild AI

SoftBank is currently in talks to invest $500 million in Skild AI, a software company that is creating a fundamental model for robotics with a valuation of $4 billion, as reported by Bloomberg and Financial Times.

The 2-year-old company previously secured $300 million in funding at a $1.5 billion valuation last July from investors like Jeff Bezos, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Coatue Management.

Skild’s AI model has the versatility to be utilized across different kinds of robots, according to founders Deepak Pathak and Abhinav Gupta. They mentioned to TechCrunch last July that this model can be customized for a specific domain or use case.

The convergence of robotics and AI has attracted significant attention from investors. Over the past year, investors, especially Bezos, have been increasing their investments in AI-powered robotics companies.

Physical Intelligence, a startup that attained $400 million at a $2 billion pre-money valuation in November, is one of the companies claiming to be developing the “brains” for a wide range of robots. Jeff Bezos, Lux Capital, and Thrive Capital were the leaders of that funding round.

In February, Figure AI, a startup creating an AI-powered humanoid robot, secured $675 million at a $2.6 billion valuation from Microsoft, OpenAI Startup Fund, Nvidia, Amazon Industrial Innovation Fund, and Jeff Bezos (through Bezos Expeditions).
