Streaming service and media software maker Plex unveiled a new software redesign aimed at enhancing discovery, improving access to your watchlist, and offering more personalization features. This update caters to home media enthusiasts who utilize the app to organize their media libraries.
Having raised $40 million in early 2024, Plex is moving towards profitability by the end of the year or early 2025. To achieve this goal, the company has introduced a redesign that focuses on improving the user experience.
The redesign, which has been two years in the making, introduces a new interface with redesigned navigation that simplifies exploration of Plex’s services. The update swaps out hamburger menus for tabbed navigation with buttons at the bottom of the screen, providing a more mobile-friendly experience.
Users can easily switch between sections like their media library, Live TV channels, On Demand streams, and more. The update also includes a Discovery section and a personalized home page that suggests content users may be interested in watching.
For users who continue to manage their home libraries through Plex, a dedicated button provides centralized access to this feature. Users can also customize their experience by favoriting libraries.
The Plex Watchlist, where users can keep track of the shows and movies they want to watch, has been given a more prominent placement in the top navigation for quicker access.
Other changes in the update include reorganizing personal details like profiles, watch history, friends, and streaming services into one place. Additionally, the app has enhanced its use of visual imagery in movie and show detail pages, cast and crew profiles, and user profiles.
Under the hood, the apps have been rewritten and streamlined to unify the codebase. This will enable faster releases of new features across all supported platforms.
While the redesign is initially available as an early-access preview on mobile devices, Plex plans to expand it to all devices after collecting user feedback. Some features, such as playlists and cast support, are still in development and will be added during the preview period, with support for TV platforms coming soon.
