AI-focused search startup Perplexity has just released its native Mac app, stepping up its game to compete with other AI apps like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Quora’s Poe app, which pulls together various large language models. Perplexity had been dropping hints about the app earlier this month, prompting users to sign up for preorders to receive a notification once the app is live.
The Mac app is available for free, but users can opt to purchase Perplexity Pro for $20 per month or $200 annually. This subscription unlocks more than 300 Pro searches, providing deeper search results compared to the basic free quick search option.

On top of that, the Mac version allows users to quickly access the Perplexity search feature through keyboard shortcuts. Voice mode, file upload, and voice dictation mode can also be activated using shortcuts. While users could previously upload files and ask questions by typing on the website, the addition of voice mode and dictation makes it easier for those who prefer audio interactions.
The new app also enables users to ask follow-up questions and review conversation history through the sidebar. Last year, Perplexity launched both iOS and Android apps. Recent reports from The Wall Street Journal indicate that Perplexity is seeking to secure $500 million in funding, which would double its valuation to $8 billion. Earlier this month, The New York Times sent the company a cease-and-desist letter, alleging that the startup was engaging in scraping and plagiarism.
