Microsoft has recently decided to slow down its expansion of data center projects worldwide, according to a report from Bloomberg. The company seems to be cautious about growing its cloud computing infrastructure too quickly.
Reports indicate that Microsoft has either postponed or stopped discussions about developing data center sites in various locations, including the U.K., Australia, North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. A spokesperson mentioned that the company plans its projects years in advance and that these changes highlight the flexibility of its strategy.

Just in February, Microsoft had reaffirmed its intention to invest over $80 billion in capital expenditures by 2025, with a focus on AI data centers. Bloomberg notes that it’s unclear whether the recent slowdown is due to decreased demand expectations or temporary challenges like power and building material shortages.
Microsoft had previously stated that it would pivot its data center expansion strategy for 2025, shifting from new construction to upgrading existing facilities with servers and other computing equipment.
