Introducing Google’s Bold New Android Design: Material 3 Expressive

Google introduced its new Android design language, Material 3 Expressive, at the Android Show before Google I/O. This update aims to give your phone more customization options and a smoother experience, according to the tech giant.

Material 3 Expressive includes new springy animations that will make your phone feel more fluid. For instance, when you dismiss a notification, you will notice a detach transition and feel a haptic rumble. Similar animations and haptics will be present when interacting with different features, like dismissing an app in your recent apps screen or adjusting the volume slider.

This update also adds a subtle blur effect to the background to provide a sense of depth, helping you stay oriented while navigating your phone.

VP of Product and UX, Android Platform, Mindy Brooks, explained, “Material 3 Expressive is an extension of new components and capabilities meant to add emotion to product UIs. This aims to provide a premium and engaging experience that is user-friendly and brings more joy in key moments.”

Android users will also enjoy updated dynamic color themes and bold typography for personalization. These visual updates will extend to Google apps such as Google Photos and Gmail. Additionally, users can customize Quick Settings by adding more favorite actions like Flashlight and Do Not Disturb.

Live Updates is a new feature that will allow users to easily track progress notifications from select apps like Uber Eats. This real-time feature is similar to iOS’s Live Activities feature.

For Wear OS watches, Material 3 Expressive brings fluid design changes with scrolling animations that follow the circular display. Daily experiences like using the pin pad and controlling media will also be updated with motion and responsive feedback.

Watch faces can now theme the entire system in Google Apps for a more personalized experience. Tiles will be more engaging, providing quick access to information or actions like contacting favorite contacts or starting a workout.

These design improvements will first be available on Pixel devices later this year with Android 16. The Pixel Watch will receive these updates with Wear OS 6 later this year as well.
