Google Removes AI Weapon Pledge from Website

Google removed a commitment not to develop AI for weapons or surveillance from its website this week. The change was first noticed by Bloomberg. The company seems to have updated its public AI principles page by removing a section titled “applications we will not pursue,” which was still there just last week.

When asked for a comment, Google directed TechCrunch to a new blog post on “responsible AI.” The post mentions, in part, “we believe that companies, governments, and organizations that share these values should collaborate to create AI that protects people, promotes global growth, and supports national security.”

Google’s recently updated AI principles now state that the company will strive to “prevent unintended or harmful consequences and avoid unfair bias,” while also aiming to adhere to “widely accepted principles of international law and human rights.”

In recent times, Google’s contracts to provide cloud services to the U.S. and Israeli militaries have caused protests from within the company. Google has insisted that its AI is not used for harmful purposes, but the Pentagon’s AI chief recently informed TechCrunch that some of the company’s AI models are expediting the U.S. military’s kill chain.
