Apple’s list of finalists for the “iPhone App of the Year” award highlights a trend of prioritizing traditional iOS apps over AI-powered technology. The 2024 lineup includes apps like Kino for recording professional video, Runna for running plans, and Tripsy for travel organization. Meanwhile, AI apps such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot didn’t make the cut.
Despite ChatGPT’s popularity and collaboration with Apple, it received no official accolades this year. The app introduced new features like Advanced Voice Mode and a web search function challenging Google, yet failed to earn recognition from Apple’s editorial team. Apple and Google also overlooked ChatGPT as a top app in 2023, despite its rapid user growth.

A few AI-powered apps made it to Apple’s finalist lists for the iPad and Mac App of the Year. Moises, a music practice app, was nominated alongside Bluey: Let’s Play and Procreate Dreams for iPad App of the Year. Adobe Lightroom, featuring AI tools, earned a spot for Mac App of the Year.
Among the Cultural Impact finalists, only EF Hello, a language-learning app enhanced by AI technology, was highlighted. Apple’s selection indicates a focus on apps that enhance human creativity rather than AI automation. These apps empower users to design, organize, film, create, or play without relying heavily on AI features.
Additionally, Apple introduced the Apple Vision Pro category this year, recognizing both an app and a game winner. This initiative reflects Apple’s ongoing support for apps that cater to various user needs, from productivity tools to creativity enhancers.
