Anthropic joins forces with Palantir and AWS to deliver cutting-edge AI to defense clients

Anthropic announced on Thursday that it’s partnering with data analytics company Palantir and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to offer U.S. intelligence and defense agencies access to Anthropic’s Claude series of AI models. This move reflects a trend among AI vendors seeking deals with U.S. defense clients for strategic and financial reasons. Meta, for example, is now making its Llama models available to defense partners, while OpenAI is working on a closer relationship with the U.S. Defense Department.

According to Kate Earle Jensen, Anthropic’s head of sales, the collaboration with Palantir and AWS will bring Claude’s usage to Palantir’s platform by using AWS hosting capabilities. Claude is now accessible on Palantir’s platform, specifically in Palantir Impact Level 6 (IL6), the defense-accredited environment. IL6 is reserved for data of critical national security importance, requiring maximum protection from unauthorized access and tampering. Information in IL6 systems can be up to a “secret” level.

Anthropic aims to provide responsible AI solutions for U.S. classified environments, enhancing analytical capabilities and operational efficiencies in government operations. Bringing Claude to Palantir on AWS will provide U.S. defense and intelligence organizations with powerful AI tools to process vast amounts of complex data quickly. This will significantly improve intelligence analysis, aid in decision-making, streamline tasks, and boost efficiency across departments.

During the summer, Anthropic introduced select Claude models to AWS’ GovCloud, demonstrating its plans to expand its public-sector client base. GovCloud is designed for U.S. government cloud workloads. The company positions itself as a vendor prioritizing safety, although its terms of service allow product usage for tasks like foreign intelligence analysis, identifying covert campaigns, and offering advance warnings of potential military activities.

Government interest in AI is growing, with a significant increase in AI-related government contracts reported in a Brookings Institute analysis. However, some sectors like the U.S. military have been slow to adopt AI technology due to skepticism about its return on investment. Anthropic, expanding to Europe, is in talks to raise a new funding round at a valuation of up to $40 billion, with Amazon as its largest investor.
