Lyft teams up with May Mobility and Mobileye to offer self-driving cars on their app

Lyft is ramping up its efforts to compete with Uber in the realm of autonomous vehicle partnerships. The ride-hailing company announced on Wednesday three separate collaborations aimed at securing a foothold in the growing autonomous vehicle market.

In a bold move, Lyft has partnered with startup May Mobility, automated driving company Mobileye, and smart dashcam firm Nexar. The partnerships are all geared towards integrating autonomous vehicles into the Lyft app and improving insights into training autonomous driving systems.

May Mobility, known for its autonomous micro-transit services in various U.S. cities, will launch autonomous vehicles on the Lyft app in Atlanta starting in 2025. Similarly, Lyft’s partnership with Mobileye will allow certain AV tech-equipped vehicles to connect to the ride-hailing app. Additionally, the agreement with Nexar aims to provide better insights to car manufacturers and operators for training autonomous driving systems.

This move marks Lyft’s continued foray into autonomous vehicles, following previous robotaxi services in cities like Las Vegas, Austin, and Miami in partnership with various companies such as Motional and Argo AI. Despite some setbacks in previous partnerships, Lyft remains committed to expanding its presence in the autonomous vehicle market.

In contrast, Uber has been actively pursuing partnerships with top AV companies, securing deals with industry leaders like Waymo, Cruise, and Aurora Innovation.

The partnership with May Mobility marks the company’s first venture into ride-hail services. Details about the deployment of AVs, the number of vehicles, and the type of transit services have not been disclosed. However, initial deployments will include safety drivers with plans to transition to fully driverless vehicles over time.

Mobileye, known for its self-driving technology, will allow fleet operators with Mobileye Drive technology to connect to the Lyft network, opening up new opportunities for riders and drivers. The goal is to create seamless access to Lyft’s platform for both small and large fleet operators.

Meanwhile, Nexar’s collaboration with Lyft aims to combine real-world footage and marketplace data to enhance AV technology development. By leveraging each other’s strengths, the companies hope to create a robust dataset for improving autonomous driving systems.

Both Lyft and Mobileye are currently testing their technology in various cities and countries, with plans to expand their partnership in the future. The progression towards fully autonomous vehicles is a significant step for both companies, as they strive to revolutionize the future of transportation.
