Stargate, the ambitious project to build data centers for OpenAI in the U.S., is facing challenges as it lacks a fully developed plan and has not secured funding yet, as reported by the Financial Times.
Backed by OpenAI, SoftBank, Middle East AI fund MGX, and others, Stargate aims to invest around $100 billion, potentially reaching up to $500 billion, in data centers to support OpenAI’s AI workloads. However, initial commitments from SoftBank and OpenAI are around $15 billion each, with the rest of the funding relying on a mix of equity and debt from investors.

Elon Musk, billionaire and head of President Donald Trump’s DOGE advisory commission, recently criticized Stargate on social media, questioning the project’s financial status. His remarks have reportedly sparked controversy among White House officials, despite Trump’s attempts to play down the situation.
We have reached out to OpenAI for a statement and will update this post with any response we receive.
